General Lottery Information

The Hutchison Lottery is open and accepting applications for the 2025-2026 school year.

THE LOTTERY PORTAL WILL CLOSE FEBRUARY 17TH AT 3:00 PM.

Students must be on track for the grade level that they are applying for.

If you are interested, please submit a lottery application, you will receive a waitlist notification.  Counseling staff will return from summer break in late July and begin to invite students from the waitlist at that time.

Hutchison High School Application & Lottery Process

Anyone who is eligible to attend high school in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District may submit an application to enter the Hutchison High School Lottery.  Enrollment at Hutchison is limited at each grade level. A lottery will be held each spring to determine enrollment for the following school year.

Incoming 9th Graders:  All completed applications received by the deadline will be entered into the freshman lottery. Names will be drawn randomly by career cluster for available space. When there are more applications than space available in a career cluster, a specific waitlist for that career cluster will be created.

10th -12th Graders:  Students wishing to attend Hutchison as a full-time student beginning their sophomore through senior years may also apply for the lottery.  Names will be drawn randomly by career cluster for available space. When there are more applications than space available in a career cluster, a specific waitlist for that career cluster will be created.

Selection Process:

Completed applications must be submitted by the deadline to be entered into the lottery. The lottery will determine enrollment for the following school year and establish waitlists by grade level and career cluster.

Students may apply to ONE career cluster of their choice.

It is the parent/guardian responsibility to ensure that the information provided on the application is correct.  Applications must be completed by a parent with custodial authority or by a legal guardian.

The Lottery Process:

Applications for full-time enrollment are separated by five career cluster areas; (1) Architecture and Construction, (2) Arts Audio/Visual and Communications, (3) Health Occupations, (4) Information Technology, and (5) Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics, also known as the Auto cluster.

Students may select one career cluster to be entered into the lottery. When the career cluster is drawn, all applications submitted for that career cluster will be entered into the lottery and drawn through a random computer-generated selection process. Students will be seated based on the number of spaces available.  Students who are not seated through the lottery will be waitlisted.

Wait List:

The lottery will generate a wait list of students who are not selected by the lottery to immediately enroll in Hutchison High School. The wait list will be used to fill open seats that may occur during the first two weeks of the school year.  Vacancies will not be filled throughout the course of the school year after the first two weeks until the following fall semester. Waitlists will not carry over from year to year. Students must apply to the lottery each spring to be entered into the lottery for fall enrollment.

Students will be called on an individual basis in the order placed on the waitlist for each cluster and grade as openings become available.

Continued Enrollment:

Once accepted through the lottery and enrolled at Hutchison High School, students are re-enrolled the following year dependent upon attendance and maintaining coursework in their identified cluster classes.

Student Withdrawal:

If a student withdraws from Hutchison High School to attend another school or homeschool, they must complete the application lottery process if they wish to return.

Staff Preference:

Children of FPA, ESSA, and FEA staff who are employed at Hutchison High School are permitted to attend Hutchison regardless of lottery outcome in accordance with current negotiated agreements.

Sibling Preference:

There is no sibling preference for enrollment at Hutchison High School.  As a career technical high school, enrollment is based on seat availability each year in the five career clusters at Hutchison High School.

Late Applications:

There is no late application period for the Hutchison High School enrollment lottery.

Lottery Results:

Once contact has been made via phone call, text and/or email, the family has 72 hours, to include weekend days, to accept. If no response is received after 72 hours, the next student on the waitlist will be offered the opening. All unsuccessful applicants are welcome to reapply for the lottery the following year.

Nondiscrimination Disclosure:

Hutchison High School does not discriminate towards any individual as defined in FNSBSD Policy 130. The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is an equal employment and education opportunity institution, as well as a tobacco and nicotine-free learning and work environment.

Application:

Applications are accepted electronically.  If you need assistance completing one, stop by the Hutchison Counseling office and someone will assist you.  Every application must be submitted to the online lottery system in order to be included in the lottery results. Contact (907) 479-2261 for more information.

Part-Time Students:

Many FNSBSD students attend Hutchison High School career cluster classes on a part-time basis.  Part-time students attend their home school for core classes and may attend Hutchison for cluster classes as space is available.  Students interested in attending Hutchison High School on a part-time basis should work with their home attendance area school counselor to discuss their career cluster interest areas.  The home school counselor will coordinate with the Hutchison counseling department to determine space availability for specific classes.

Part-time students who wish to become full-time students of Hutchison High School must apply through the online lottery application process.

Students who attend Hutchison High School as part-time students must transport themselves. Hutchison does not have transportation.
